A Florida mother has been charged with the death of her 7-month-old baby, who drowned in a bathtub and neglected to do her nails.
Local 10 reports, 22-year-old Alyssa Caroline Jimmy, was charged with manslaughter for killing a child under the age of 18 after the child accidentally drowned on May 20.
Jimmy was bathing for the baby and his 3-year-old brother at his home in Miami-Dade, apparently at some point, as he walked out of the bathroom to do his nails in the garage.
He told investigators he felt comfortable leaving the boys in the tub unattended because there were no drain plugs in the tub and water could flow freely under the drain, the New York Post reported.
A home in the garage had a manicure station about 62 feet from the bathtub, police said.
When Jimmy returned to the bathroom about 5 to 10 minutes later, the tub was full of water and his baby son was unconscious, he told police. The drain was blocked with a small mouth towel.
He said he started doing CPR on the baby and ran to the neighbor’s house to call 911 because his phone was not working then.
The baby was taken to a nearby hospital, where paramedics were able to resume his heartbeat – but he was thought to be brain dead.
He died three days later.
Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner has determined that the child accidentally drowned.
A Miami Dead Circuit Court judge has set a 10,000 hostage bond.
“It’s a very sad set of events. I’m sorry for the inconvenience, “Judge Mindy Glazer told her mother. “Make sure you keep in touch with your attorney and listen to what they have to say to you.”
